Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Workshops - Winter 2023

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) workshops are for Pre and Tenured Faculty Members, Instructors, Sessional Instructors, Librarians, Administrative Staff, Post-Doctoral Fellows, and current Graduate Students at the University of Manitoba.

We offer a range of workshops on various EDI topics and how they translate to best practices in the classroom. The topics range from an introduction to EDI principles in course design to workshops with a more specialized EDI focus in teaching and learning.

These workshops are NOT eligible for credit in the GTP or TLC programs.

We are constantly evaluating how we deliver workshops during the coronavirus pandemic in accordance with UM health and safety policies. In-person Workshops

Please make note of the location when registering for in-person workshops. The location will be one of the following:

Fort Garry Campus - Room 325, Education Building (71 Curry Place)
Fort Garry Campus - Room 223, The Centre (65 Dafoe Road)
Bannatyne Campus - Room A474, Chown Building (753 McDermot Avenue)

All in-person workshops are BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). We recommend bringing a laptop, tablet, or smartphone to get the most benefit from our workshops.

During the winter term, seating will be based on room capacity and will be processed in the order of registration. The minimum number of workshop participants needed to offer a workshop is 4 participants. If there are fewer than 4 participants, the workshop may be cancelled. You will receive notification from The Centre if the workshop is cancelled prior to or on the day of the workshop.

Remote Workshops

Remote workshops will be delivered through UM Learn using Zoom. You will be enrolled in the UM Learn course one day prior to the workshop. If you are accessing the workshop from a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone, some of the Zoom tools used in the session may not be available to you.

The minimum number of workshop participants needed to offer a workshop is 4 participants. If there are fewer than 4 participants, the workshop may be cancelled. You will receive notification from The Centre if the workshop is cancelled prior to or on the day of the workshop.

Difficult discussions can emerge in any discipline and teaching context. Instructors might plan conversations based on course content or encounter unplanned conversations because of current events and class dynamics. In this workshop you’ll develop both proactive and reactive strategies for having these important conversations in a way that is respectful and inclusive of all learners.

Addressing Racism in Teaching and Learning

Racism exists in all corners of society, including in post-secondary education. In this foundational workshop, you’ll gain an introduction to key concepts that inform anti-racist practices both generally and in teaching and learning specifically. You’ll explore your own biases and positionality, consider places where racism manifests in a variety of educational contexts, and discuss introductory strategies that you might use to address it.

Creating Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environments for 2SLGBTQIA+ Students

Understanding the barriers that 2SLGBTQIA+ students face as a result of historic and present-day discrimination perpetuated against their community is necessary if we want to create safe and inclusive learning environments for these students. In this workshop, we will explore these barriers as well as the impact that heterocisnormative teaching and assessment practices have on 2SLGBTQIA+ students. Practical strategies that can be thoughtfully implemented will be shared.
