Professional Development Workshop

Gender is ordinary: How to welcome gender diversity every day in your classroom with Dr. Lee Airton

Event Date: Saturday, November 16, 2019    |    Event Time: 10:00 am-12:00 pm

Event Location: Education Auditorium, ED106

Dr. Lee Airton is an Assistant Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies in Education at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. They have maintained the blog They Is My Pronoun since 2011, and founded the national No Big Deal social media initiative in 2016. Most recently, they are the author of Gender: Your guide - A gender-friendly primer on what to say, what to know, and what to do in the new gender culture (2018), and with Dr. Susan Woolley are editing a forthcoming collection of lesson plans on gender diversity for K-12 teachers (forthcoming June 2020 from Canadian Scholars Press).

In this workshop, Dr. Lee Airton flips the ‘gender diversity’ script most commonly heard in education: that the kids we need to keep in mind gender-wise are those who are transgender. Rather, Dr. Airton argues for an approach to gender-expansive teaching that centres gender itself as a source of harm as well as joy in the everyday lives of students and teachers in K-12 schools. You will leave with a range of concrete practices to apply in your teaching. Check out Lee's blog: http://www.theyismypronoun.com/ and No Big Deal campaign https://www.nbdcampaign.ca/
