I look forward to welcoming you at the 2017 NAFIS Fall Conference, Back to Basics:  Moving Forward. When we gather this Fall, we will be nine months into the new Administration and the 115th Congress. Committee assignments are complete, Secretaries of agencies have been confirmed and the “routine” of governing and legislating will be in full swing.

The NAFIS Family must go “Back to Basics” with our advocacy strategy that has been an unqualified success: speaking with a unified voice, walking the halls of Congress, educating policymakers, and leveraging all of our communications channels. Because of our advocacy, the Basic Support program has received an increase in funding two years in a row, and funding for the Federal Properties program was restored, and last year, increased.

The NAFIS Family cannot rest on its laurels; we must always be “Moving Forward” advocating for Impact Aid funding and policies that support student success. The budget and appropriations process has gotten off to a late start for FY 18, and it may get slowed down considerably as Congress grapples with health care, tax reform, raising the debt ceiling and the looming sequestration caps.

The timing of the Fall conference cannot be better. We meet a week before the start of the new Fiscal Year. We will be on the Hill at an opportune moment to influence the outcome of the final appropriations bill. We must also continue to combat efforts to shift public education funding to private enterprises.

As always, the conference will feature high profile speakers and the breakout sessions will focus on topics you can incorporate in your district when you return home. You will receive the latest updates on Impact Aid funding and payments, the new Indian Policies and Procedures regulations, the Electronic Data Count pilot, and have the opportunity to meet with Department of Education staff to ask questions directly to the people who review your application.

Remember, we encourage you to show your school pride on Sunday and wear your school colors, logos, and more.
