Session 1 - Law: Real Estate Investment Trusts


The session will talk about various aspects of Real Estate Investment Trusts. The topic to be covered include but not limited to the following: 


       1. What is a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)?      

       2.Common organizational structures for closely held non-reporting REIT’s

    • Corporation
    • Limited Liability Partnership
    • Public Traded Company

        3. Regulatory/statutory regime governing REIT’s in Canada

    • Exempt non-reporting issuer;
    • Sophisticated investor and friends and family exemption

        4. Common law and statutory duties of the REIT directors/general partners to their investors

    • Duty of disclosure and accounting
    • Conflict avoidance

        5. Tax issues with REITs

    • Taxation of dividend versus distribution.
    • Tracking the reduction in the adjusted cost base for tax purposes
    • Taxation of foreign non-business income within a REIT

  Speaker's Biography:

Mr. Kent Wiebe

Wiebe Wittmann El-Khatib LLP

Mr. Wiebe is the managing partner of Wiebe Wittmann El-Khatib LLP, a corporate law firm located in downtown Vancouver.

Prior to practicing law Mr. Wiebe was an executive at Equifax Canada and Credit Management Corporation and after attending law-school was recruited by a tier one law firm in Vancouver and later moved to London England to practice at Allen & Overy LLP, the largest law firm in the world before coming back and founding his current firm.

Mr. Wiebe acts for numerous REITS and commercial property developers and sits on the board of over a dozen corporations. He also donates his time to a number of charities and is the current chairman of North Shore Community Resources.

He is a regular instructor for the CPA association and the Law Society of BC Continuing Legal Education program for lawyers on topics ranging from Credit and Finance to Investment structures.

His spare time is taken up oil painting, woodworking and spending time with his wife and three children

 Session 2 - Project Management 

Today’s business environment is experience change as a common activity. Leading teams of projects involves structuring a fully engaged and committed team. This course provides techniques needed to adopt for an efficient and effective approach. We will define the core issue, investigate options, select a course of action and execute a plan. We’ll take a look at some new processes as well as help people transition with the new change. Large and small projects will benefit from replacing outdated procedures and breaking new ground with a multi-generation team.

Registration for these events:

Early bird registration for both events until April 21 2018 is $75 which qualifies for 2 hours verifiable CPD each session (4 in total)
After April 21 2018 for both events is $80 which qualifies for 2 hours verifiable CPD each session.
Alternatively you can take either of these sessions individually for $40 each and are 2 hours verifiable CPD each.

Please note Chapter events are not eligible for the CPA BC Passport. We apologize for any inconvenience.
