Automation Projects and Battery Manufacturing in the Southern Tier of New York

Presentation Outline
Presenter: Dennis Lockhart – CIMSEE Consulting, LLC
Mr. Lockhart will review examples of manufacturing automation projects he has overseen during his career at Universal Instruments in Binghamton, NY and his subsequent work as owner and primary consultant for CIMSEE Consulting, LLC also of Binghamton, NY. Mr. Lockhart has completed over 130 projects world-wide as a Sr. Systems Project Manager and Industrial Engineering Project Leader. Examples of projects to be reviewed include establishing the largest TV factory in China, the first Apple Computer manufacturing facility in Cupertino, CA with sequential sites in Northern Ireland and San Polo, Brazil, the first Direct TV plant in Juarez Mexico, a fully automated (no humans) Frymaster food equipment manufacturing line, and a critical project to ensure full-traceability of components used in Medtronic Medical Devices, Inc. heart pacemakers. The highlight of the presentation is an in-depth account of a most recent, 9 month long project to relocate a 2.3 million sq-ft Lithium-Ion battery facility from Concord, NC to the Huron Campus (former IBM site) in Endicott, NY. The move involved approximately 120 trailer loads of equipment and complete renovation of the former IBM materials distribution center building. The massive, new, high-tech facility occupies a space equivalent to the size of 3 football fields. Learn about this massive move of the battery plant, the status of the new manufacturing facility in Endicott, the production status at the new iM3NY plant, and the future of Lithium-Ion battery manufacturing in the Southern Tier. This professional meeting also provides an opportunity for attendees, if not already aware, to become familiar with the Center for Technology and Innovation… better known as TechWorks!... and see working displays of technology that has made the Southern Tier of New York a world-leader for technology advancement and innovation.

Dennis Lockhart is the Owner, President and Head Consultant for CIMSEE Consulting, LLC headquartered in Binghamton, New York. The firm evolved from Mr. Lockhart, who is a world authority on Automated Manufacturing, Project Management, Strategic Planning, and Executive Management. Mr. Lockhart has developed some of the first applications of automated manufacturing in the United States and around the world; including Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS)using Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV’s) used initially in the United States by the telephone, sensors, and computer industries; and often used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards, final assembly areas, and test applications. Amazon, for example, uses AGV’s to deliver material from the ‘pick area’ to the ‘pack area’ to improve material flow, speed, and delivery accuracy. Dennis developed the largest Chinese television manufacturing plant in Chengdu, China with 183 automated manufacturing cells for the manufacture of printed circuit boards and semi-automated final assembly. Another project was for the DSS TV Satellite manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico that yielded 10 production lines, each was 1100 ft. long, in a 1.3 million sq. ft. facility. It involved 127 tractor trailer loads of robotics, automation cells, material handling equipment, test equipment, computers, and facility work. These large Lean Manufacturing Lines were developed during Dennis’ 25 years as Sr. System Project Manager at Universal Instruments Corporation located in Conklin, NY. These and 135 other system projects around the world included process development, project management, technological development, engineering development, logistics, installation and facility development. Companies serviced include Ford, Chrysler, GM, Bosch, Apple, Omron, Thompson, Allen Bradley, IBM, ATT, Jabil, Genie, GE, Foxconn, Invensys, Samsung, LG, Fry Master, Whirlpool, CHMF, Foxconn, and Motorola.
Mr. Lockhart’s extensive large system experience is now focused through his company, CIMSEE Consulting, LLC, which works in conjunction with Binghamton University’s Integrated Electronics Engineering Center (IEEC), the Cornell University Center for detailed material research, and Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) laboratories providing product analysis for quality and productivity. Extensive experience and knowledge of “start from scratch” (greenfield) manufacturing projects is supported by the New York University System, which provides start-up companies with a resource that helps their project become the most productive operation in New York and the USA. Current projects include Lithium Battery, Heat Storage, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), Micro-CHP, Hydro Electric, Wind, and Large Consumer Projects for Start-Ups. The Binghamton Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Professional Development meeting presentation will highlight the relocation of the very large Iperium3 New York (iM3NY) Lithium Battery automated manufacturing system from Charlotte, NC to Endicott, NY. This project required the effort of 85 people, 120 tractor trailer loads of automation, and 9 months to complete. Don’t miss this informative and exciting ASQ sponsored event!
