Snow, chilly air and winter creatures are here. Winter WonderLearn is here! This two-week virtual training convention is for all adult and Ranger-aged members. Trainers and Facilitators from across the country will be hosting many sessions that are designed to help you in your Guiding role, whether you're a Unit Guider, Senior Volunteer, Trefoil Guild member, Bridging member, Link member, Ranger, etc. So, grab your cozy socks and join us for an amazing learning experience.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

GGC is committed to ensuring that our culture, programs, and practices are accessible and inclusive of Canada’s diverse and marginalized communities. Our DEI training is designed to support our members, staff, and volunteers in fostering a welcoming and inclusive space at every level of our organization. GGC’s DEI training consists of four modules that will help you gain knowledge and skills that will enable you to contribute to the principles and commitments of a girl-driven and inclusive GGC.

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) modules build upon one another, and each is a pre-requisite for the next module. They must be taken in this order:

DEI Module 1: Introduction to Diversity and Inclusion
DEI Module 2: Identity and Bias Awareness
DEI Module 3: Safe and Inclusive Spaces
DEI Module 4: Inclusive Meetings

You will be asked to download the DEI Training Primer and complete it before your DEI Trainings.

Remember, you do not have to take all four DEI modules during this convention. Stay tuned to the National Training Calendar for more opportunities to take these courses.

DEI Module 1: Introduction to Diversity and Inclusion

This module explores the 5 Pillars of the Girl-Driven approach and inclusive Guiding. Participants will learn contextual definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and other key terms, applying those to the 5 Pillars and learning how to cultivate a unit that is both diverse and inclusive. DEI Module 2: Identity and Bias Awareness

Note: DEI Module 1 is a pre-requisite for this session.

This module deepens participants’ understanding of definitions relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participants will practice critical thinking and reflect on themselves, the environment, and society as they relate to identity and culture. This module also explores the impact of biases and assumptions, and it provides strategies for addressing and mitigating bias both within and outside of Guiding. Download the Module 2 Workbook.

DEI Module 3: Safe and Inclusive Spaces

In this module, participants will learn how to use two critical approaches for building an inclusive, compassionate and thoughtful space: an strength-based approach and a trauma-informed approach. These two approaches provide a grounding foundation for planning, facilitating, and evaluating activities and meetings. This module will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in critical thought and consider what intentional action towards a diverse and inclusive GGC looks like. In this module, participants will practice planning, facilitating, and evaluating meetings and activities using the information they learned in the previous three modules. This module offers questions and guidance for participants to reflect, plan, and make decisions using the 5 Pillars, taking intersectional identities into account, and using asset-based and trauma-informed approaches. Inclusive Adventures

Join this session to learn more about how to make your unit's outdoor adventures more accessible for all. We will take a broad look at accessibility and discuss how to make experiences accessible physically, financially, emotionally, and mentally for youth and adults.

DEI: Putting it into Practice

Have you completed at least the first two DEI modules? Do you have questions about what you learned? Is there a DEI concept that you’re struggling with? Or do you have concerns or situations you’re dealing with that you would like help with? Join our DEI Facilitators who will moderate discussions and workshop ideas and solutions. This session will also give you the chance to connect with and hear from Guiders across the country who are dealing with similar challenges.

Skill Building

As a member of GGC, you may sometimes feel like a cheerleader, an aunt, a banker, a shoulder, a doer, a planner, a coordinator, a teacher, a hugger, and more. There’s no one skill that will prepare you for the breadth of your role, but there are many skills that can help. The following two sessions will look at how we nurture and grow the best parts of Guiding, both within and outside the organization.

Random Acts of Teambuilding

1.5 hours

Through micro-changes and small gestures, YOU have the power and influence to strengthen trust, build authentic connections, and help your group rally more energetically around its purpose. This teambuilding session is not about putting on matching one-size-fits-no-one T-shirts and doing trust falls (although we welcome that if that’s your thing!). This session will approach teambuilding a lot like guerilla gardening, y’know those small acts of beautification on a neglected street that add up to big improvements in mood and atmosphere? It doesn’t matter if you’re leading the team or just another bum on the bench. We’ll invite you to try small interventions. Experiment. Join us as we learn to plant seeds of healthy team dynamics, in whatever group we’re in.

Connect Better. Recruit More.

Do you need girls? How about Guiders? Put on your role-playing hats and come ready to play! This workshop will provide you with proven conversational techniques to support interest and enrolment. Whether you’re volunteering at a Girl Guide booth, hosting a formal recruitment event, or simply asked about Guiding while sporting your hoodie in the grocery store, this practical session will give you leading edge engagement techniques you can apply in any situation to support member growth. Recruitment toolkits and contact information from the Member Growth team will also be provided.

Outdoor Activity Leadership

Getting outside, enjoying nature, and challenging ourselves are some of the best parts of the Guiding experience and are a central part of the Girl Guide philosophy and program. The Outdoor Activity Leadership (OAL) program is designed to empower Guiders like you to undertake meaningful outdoor activities with girls in a variety of settings.

OAL: Getting Outside

2 hours

Get support for preparing outdoor activities. Gather insights and inspiration for leading outdoor games, nature walks, outdoor unit meetings, an afternoon outing at a conservation area, or a day camp. Topics will include: creating a plan; preparing clothing, equipment, and food; and planning activities.

OAL: Indoor Camping

These modules are for new leaders or inexperienced campers to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to take girls on a one- or two-night indoor camping experience, and to ensure that you have the skills and confidence to deliver a fun, safe, age-appropriate camp. There are four parts:

OAL: Indoor Camping - Leading

Thoughtful leadership can mean the difference between camp magic and camp disaster. Leading is not about giving directions, but rather empowering the group to do what’s needed in the best way possible. In this module, you will explore different leadership styles, relevant areas of Safe Guide, and the supports needed for girls to challenge themselves.

OAL: Indoor Camping - Planning

Develop the skills needed to plan an indoor camp. This includes putting a team together (including girls!), establishing a timeline, booking a camp, creating an itinerary, choosing activities, preparing a budget and gear list, and organizing a caregiver meeting.

Food is an essential part of any camp! Meals that are tasty and enjoyed by everyone are a great morale boaster. When well planned, meal preparation and consumption can be one of the most fun and memorable parts of camp.

At camp, there should be time to daydream, explore, and deepen friendships. This freedom is an essential element of camping; remember to keep it alive in your camps! There should be time for all campers to enjoy their surroundings – to lie on the grass and watch the clouds above, or to explore a trail or learn about a flower. Don’t over-program your itinerary. The activity of camping itself is enough. Take time to enjoy the outdoors!

Trainer Learning Path

The Trainer Learning Path is a professional development program that provides the knowledge, skills and practice to become an effective and engaging Trainer. It is open to all adult members interested in becoming a GGC Trainer, as well as any members interested in developing or strengthening their skills as facilitators, educators or presenters. Whether you’re a Trainer Candidate, an experienced Trainer, or just looking to develop and strengthen your skills, there’s lots available for you!
