The SCSPLS Convention and Technical Conference will be returning to Columbia and the DoubleTree by Hilton on Bush River Road.

Conferences are always about more than technical programs and trade shows; the 2023 SCSPLS Convention and Technical Conference also realizes the importance of opportunities to meet and converse with fellow professionals. An exhibitor reception on Thursday evening serves as a networking opportunity between engineers and exhibitors. Session breaks, lunches and the banquet are also great times for meeting and talking with fellow professionals.

The conference offers a trade show where products and services engineers use directly or specify are offered with knowledgeable representatives to assist participants.

Surveyors and other design professionals attending the conference February 23-24 at the DoubleTree by Hilton may gain up to 15 PDHs and choose from a variety of more than 20 programs.

How Land Surveyors Create Added Value Value creation is a popular topic in the business literature, but is rarely discussed in the A/E industry. Perhaps its time has come. While the robust economy has tempered many issues of concern for the present, land surveying practitioners can see trouble on the horizon. There are fewer graduates entering the profession. Many are concerned that technological innovation will limit future growth of the business. Commoditization of services continues to persist, a sure sign of eroded value. In this workshop, we will discuss how the A/E industry in general has squandered opportunities to enhance perceived value, and how surveyors suffer for it. We’ll explore strategies for combating the commoditization trend—what works and what doesn’t (hint: we usually default to the latter). You’ll be challenged to rethink how our industry, and specifically the surveying business, creates value for clients and society. And you’ll learn some practical steps for adding value to your services, and your profession overall. But this workshop avoids being overly prescriptive. Participants will work together to identify value creation strategies for the surveying business, based on the principles we learn. We promise a stimulating discussion of the challenges and opportunities for strengthening our profession, while learning how to think and communicate differently about how surveying truly benefits others. Topics covered will include: Why value creation is critical to business success, The symptoms of project myopia, and why it’s a problem, How to better align your perspective with that of your clients, The importance of connecting your work to the client’s ROI, The value of delivering great client experiences and the need for an intentional approach to relationship building.

This FEMA and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) class will provide up to date information on the outcome of the NFIP reauthorization, the proposed bills to extend and modify the insurance program, as well as Risk Rating 2.0 and how to prepare for this change.

We will review how these changes will affect your Elevation Certificate services you provide and what information you need to know to educate your clients. Private Flood Insurance is a growing market segment and we will review the differences these polices have as compared to the NFIP program.

We will provide an in depth look into how the Elevation Certificate is utilized by the insurance industry to rate a properties flood risk for NFIP Flood Insurance, in addition we will explain how a local municipality uses the form to enforce their Floodplain Management Ordinance.

The NEW Elevation Certificate has some changes that will make documenting flood vents easier and we will have a full review of those changes. At the end of this upbeat class participants will be better equipped to complete the Elevation Certificate correctly and more accurately.

Maintaining and repairing today's survey equipment has become increasingly important since the beginning of the new, electronic age. This discussion will focus on topics that include the importance of scheduling time in your organization to perform this much needed maintenance and adjustment. We will discuss the differences in what you can do yourself in the field and what a service center can provide additionally. As the discussion continues we will time (hands-on) performing our own maintenance on prism poles, GNSS rods, tribraches, tripods, auto levels, total station, robotic total stations, GNSS and Data Collectors. We will finish the class discussing other sources of error and recommendations on how to reduce this.
